Sichimbwali is a rural community and school district within a remote area in Kalomo District, in the Southern Province of Zambia. The closest health post is 16km away, but it is small and basic, and there is no maternity care. As a result, home births are common, putting both mother and infant at risk. The community is also at risk of malaria and HIV.
The Sichimbwali Health Post will enable access to healthcare for the entire community and outreach villages. This will help to reduce mother and infant mortality as women will come to the clinic to give birth Additionally, mosquito nets will be donated to school children at Sichimbwali and neighbouring schools. People presenting with malaria can be tested and treated at the facility. HIV testing and treatment will be readily available. More parents will bring children to the facility for vaccinations. This grant will also fund necessary equipment and furniture will be provided, and The Butterfly Tree will provide training to reduce new cases of HIV, early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and drug and alcohol abuse.
The new Health Post will be funded by the Tom Love Trust and will become a permanent facility, managed by the community and the Ministry of Health.
