Burundi is the second poorest country in the world with an estimated 600,000 orphans and street children deriving from conflict, poverty and/or Aids. The lack of child rights and protection is a significant social issue with gender discrimination keeping the status of girls among the lowest in society.
Working in partnership the UK consortium New Generation Partners, comprising Street Action and the Amos Trust, the Road to School programme consolidates informal, inconsistent activity into a larger, more effective, holistic street child programme to transform the children’s physical and emotional well-being and education. There are several elements involved:
– A street outreach worker is visiting the streets daily supported by a twice-weekly, mobile, safe-space in a bus owned by the project;
– Continuing to strengthen the Back-to-School programme to 80 children which requires additional funding for food, uniforms, school fees;
– Funding a part-time Teaching and Activities Co-ordinator.
By strengthening the provision, this project continues to enable young people to achieve more in every area of life.
