New Generation Burundi - Burundi
Road to school programme

New Generation is a nonprofit organisation, focused on training and equipping young people to become the future leaders of Burundi.
Years: 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019

Burundi is the second poorest country in the world, bordered with Rwanda, Tanzania and the DR Congo with an estimated 600,000 orphans and street children deriving from conflict, poverty and/or Aids. The lack of child rights and protection is a significant social issue with gender discrimination keeping the status of girls among the lowest in society.
Working in partnership the UK consortium New Generation Partners comprising of Street Action and the Amos Trust, the Road to School programme will consolidate informal, inconsistent activity into a larger, more effective, holistic street child programme to transform the children’s physical and emotional well-being and education. There are 3 elements:
1. Outreach programme: A Street Outreach worker, enabling a change from occasional visits to the streets to a programme of daily visits supported by a twice-weekly “mobile safe-space” in a bus owned by the project.
2. Doubling the Back to School programme to 80 children. This requires additional funding for food, uniforms, school fees and a second part-time Teaching and Activities Co-ordinator.
3. Strengthening the Back to School programme. The results so far are excellent, but these children can achieve so much more with one part time assistant and counsellor to increase integration.
