Kids Company - UK

The Angus Bus

Kids Company was founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996. They provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children.Their services reach 36,000 and intensively support 18,000 children across London.

Years: 2008

Kids Company used the funding we provided to buy a bus to reach kids who live too far away from The Arches II in Brixton. Founder Camila Batmanghelidjh set up the Arches, creating a place where no kids will ever be turned away. They go there after school or during the day knowing they can have a hot meal, health care, find jobs and meet other kids in the same situation as themselves. It is a safe haven where they can escape drug dealers, abuse and the loneliness of going home to a shattered home and neglect. The Arches II also provides basic health screenings as so many of the children are self–referring off the streets so are not registered with a GP due to their chaotic home lives.

The children can use the Angus Bus to play, have holistic therapy, have a chat and just be allowed to be children. It provides a happy environment and the Angus Bus is decorated using the children's ideas. Every day the Angus Bus goes out to different housing estates reaching out and making an enormous difference to socially maginalised children.

Sport at Kids Company is invaluable as it forms part of a multidisciplinary approach to help regulate and moderate disturbed children’s behaviour. It gives a real opportunity to promote unity and tolerance; promotes teamwork and youth leadership; engages young people in the organisation of sport and empowers them to coach other young adults. From June 2008 ALMT was happy to support football across all age groups at Kids Company. It made a grant to provide professional support for young adults training to become coaches and to provide equipment/clothing for teams and for new activities provided in both Kid Company’s drop-in centres. The aim was to allow young people to build their self-esteem and help them progress in a safe and controlled environment and to empower young adults with the responsibility of organising events and coaching others
