This project will target rural schools where 65% of the population lives in poverty. Although education is free in Ghana, 75.7% of the population in the Upper East Region (UER) aged three and over has no schooling in comparison to 47.7% nationally. Education is not prioritised due to compulsory school cost such as uniform and textbooks. Children are expected to earn an income and help contribute to the family’s income.
With support from the ALMT, AfriKids will target children from vulnerable groups and communities to remove physical, financial and psychological barriers that stop children fulfilling their education. Support will be provided for those helped back into education which will include counselling for both child and family, registration for a local school, family income generation support e.g. goats for rearing. Teachers will receive training to ensure they can support the needs of vulnerable children and to ensure they are aware of the warning signs that a child could display. To promote education at a community level through child rights festivals, families and community members will be engaged and gain knowledge about child rights. Also, to ensure early years education centres are well resources to provide quality education.
