Flexicare - UK
Supporting volunteers to support others
Flexicare is a small local Oxfordshire charity which provides a sitting service in the homes of families who have a child/children with severe physical and/or learning disabilities which may include problems with mobility, feeding, breathing, communication and seizures.
Years: 2015, 2016
If a child has challenging behaviour due to severe autism or needs suctioning because they have a compromised swallow or other complex needs, it is unlikely they are able to be left with anyone that does not have specialist skills to care for them. Flexicare offers sitting in/care at a child’s home to give the parent the opportunity to do things that most families take for granted e.g. going to the cinema, going shopping, or attending an event at which a sibling is performing.
Three part-time paid coordinators are helped by between 20 and 25 volunteers. Many of the volunteers have relevant experience or qualifications but those without are also welcomed and trained by working alongside an experienced volunteer or a paid coordinator. All are aware of the need to provide flexible help, and the amount of time they offer varies and depends on their own circumstances. ALMT are supporting Flexicare in providing volunteers with the funds to cover their travel and phone call expenses from Flexicare.
