Responding to Covid-19 - Fun activities outside school hours

Fun activities for young people outside school hours

Years: 2020

Established in 1979, The Avenues is an exceptional youth club in North Westminster, providing a safe space for young people out of school hours and during holidays. Aged 8-18, and evenly split by gender, members reflect the diverse cultural and ethnic composition of the local community, one of the 10% most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK.

The majority of The Avenues members come from low-income households, without a financial safety net, so the absence of work, coupled with a prolonged period of isolation, means many families are facing debt and uncertainty. Having been largely housebound since mid-March, members have missed months of socialization, physical exercise, mental stimulation and structured support that The Avenues normally provides after-school and during holidays.

This funding will provide 13 days of activities during July and August 10am-5pm for 100 young people. The Summer programme will focus on fitness, providing daily structure and support, developing positive attitudes, serving daily healthy lunches, whilst observing social distancing guidelines. Activities will take place in the professional kitchen, dance studio, sports hall, class room, art and design studio, music studio and radio broadcasting suite. Alongside socialisation, fitness and skills activities, the qualified and experienced team of youth workers will run workshops and facilitated discussions on mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, staying safe and other issues they wish to discuss. A close relationship with social services allows The Avenues to refer children with more complex needs that emerge.

Members will be given a free, healthy breakfast and lunch. During lockdown a team of volunteers has been cooking and delivering daily lunch and food parcels to 100 vulnerable children and the Summer Programme will involve participants in helping prepare an evening meal they can take home with them to ease their families’ financial burden.
