Peckham Shed's Summer School

'We simply couldn't do what we do without you and your kind hearts and clever heads.'
Rebecca Cahill - Chair, Peckham Shed
Peckham Shed is a theatre company with a difference. They run inspiring theatre workshops for children and young people aged 5 – 17 years old, living in and around South East London. They are open to anyone and everyone whatever their background or ability and promote a safe and supportive space where everyone can achieve.

Years: 2012, 2013

Peckham Shed had to close at the end of 2013 due to lack of funds and capacity. The ALMT are extremely proud of what they achieved over their many years in operation and of the way in which they used the ALMT's grant to train volunteers and deliver the summer school in 2012.

The ALMT is so proud to have funded Peckham Shed's Summer School which was a fantastic two week programme with street dancing, circus skills, theatre arts, film making and comedy acting drop in sessions on week one. Week two provided an amazing opportunity to create a play from scratch in a week using the Peckham Peace Wall as a stimulus.

Peckham Shed did a series of consultations with young people in the area to see what kind of things they would like to try and this shaped the sessions. They targeted those young people that don't have parents or supportive adults in their lives. It encouraged them to be part of extra curricular activities so they were not left to entertain themselves during the holiday which leads to boredom. During the summer these young people tend to fall behind in their learning development and, on returning to school, the gap between them and their peers living in more secure socio-economic backgrounds widens.

The ALMT is also supporting Peckham Shed in 2013 to deliver sign language training and provide sensory equipment to use during their sessions by encouraging guests at the 2013 Burns Night to pledge their donation to specific partners. The Trust hopes that being part of something constructive and supportive will help improve their own confidence and allow them to develop as young people with strong aspirations.
