Organiser for the event, Jamie Wroath tells us how they did it.

"Kevin, Neil and I took part in the "Cumbrian Challenge" in March to raise money for the ALMT. The pre-event literature said you needed to be fit but not an athlete, be able to run about 5 miles and cycle for about 15. How hard could that be? Kevin certainly thought it wouldn't be too difficult when he signed me up. The reality, sadly, was rather more punishing.....

We started off with a gentle 2km run, up a very steep hill. Then it was onto the bike for 20km of serious off road stuff. I had a nagging feeling before the event that perhaps having not ridden a bike in anger for about 20 years might be an issue but nothing prepared me for that first hill and that saddle soreness after a couple of hours on a bike. But we did get through it. Kevin and Neil were forced to wait for me once or twice but they did it with good grace and were, mostly encouraging and supportive. Next was a 5km run up an even steeper hill and down the other side to Lake Coniston for the kayaking where we almost capsized. To be fair to the boat the three of us did set it a considerable weight distribution challenge. We mastered it in the end though, completing the 1km kayak and then the small matter of a 4km run back up the hill and down the other side to finally reach the finishing line.

The whole event took about 4 and a half hours and was one of the most exhausting things I have ever done but we raised just over £4,500 so it was undoubtedly worth it, even if it took a few days of recovery to appreciate that!"
