Compassion for Migrant Children

Huge scale urbanisation is leaving a ‘lost generation’ of children in Beijing with no education as parents are forced to leave them behind as they go out to find work. Regulations whereby schooling is provided in the place of birth and not where the families move to means children of migrant families are missing out on their education. Compassion for Migrant Children is a large scale project which provides education and teacher training and life vocational skills to more than 1000 children a week.

The trust has dedicated a £45,000 grant to support its After Schools Program which will pay for salaries, running costs and two Angus classrooms. The project funded by the ALMT supports children through homework tutoring while in a safe environment, after their homework is finished the children take part in a creative activity and social activities including sport.

Compassion for Migrant Children offers a wide range of services through its centres including teacher training, life skills and preparation for the job market. The project is supported by corporate social responsibility donations made by a wide variety of companies and trusts. However, the ALMT’s grant will be ring-fenced to pay for the two Angus classrooms, the After Schools Programme and its running costs.
