Calabash Trust (South Africa) June 2009

Over the last three years Reed's School in Surrey has worked in association with Calabash Trust UK. This is a small charity based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, which empowers the disadvantaged communities of the townships. The Trust aims to develop and support sustainable projects in the townships with focus on nutrition and education. For the past three years, a group of sixth formers from Reed’s have successfully laboured to build three sports fields at primary schools in the townships. This year the project has been extended and they are planning to resource a container library. This has involved filling a container with books, sports and school equipment and paying to ship it to South Africa. They have purchased a converted 40 foot container which will become a library at The Isaac Boi Primary School. In addition they intend to lay a netball court with the help of local contractors. The ALMT have donated £2,500 to Calabash Trust UK that will ensure  both of these projects can be completed. www.calabashtrust.org.uk
