The team, led by Simon Fawcett, set off on Friday at 10:00am from the Tower of London, along with competing teams from Barclays Capital, Credit Suisse, Société Générale, Tudor Capital Europe LLP and UBS.

The Deutsche Bank team were off to a promising start, leading the race by over 9 minutes after the run leg down to Dover. Rough seas meant that the teams could not undertake the Channel swim, instead completing the swim by doing laps of a cold and choppy Dover harbour. The team lost time completing the swimming leg, according to team member Alex Wilson, “The swim turned out to be incredibly tough, with currents rendering many swimmers static at certain points of the course,” he explained. “Next year if we are to win we need to improve on our sea swimming as it is the dominant event for the overall race outcome.”

The final leg saw the teams cycle through the night to get to Paris, with the Deutsche Bank team working hard to come second on that discipline, Simon Fawcett, the team leader explained, “I was on the last bike leg, racing across glorious French countryside at sunrise whilst being chased hard by two other teams, but ultimately managing to hold them off - a pretty awesome experience.”

The clear race winners were Credit Suisse, with Barclays Capital taking second place just ahead of Deutsche Bank. Both teams had taken advantage of the challenge’s new rule, which allowed teams to use four people on all three events, with two specialists available for each of the three disciplines. The Deutsche Bank team decided not to use the new rule, meaning all six team members took part in every event, however team leader Simon Fawcett believes that if they do use the rule next year, and find a couple of good swimmers to include, that first place will be well within their sights.
