Ruth's Blog about Paris Marathon

Ruth’s blog, 20th February 2008

Hi, and welcome to my first contribution to Jess and Ruth’s Paris Marathon 2008 blog diary…

Jess and I had a great moment on Saturday, one which I will not forget for a long time if only for the sheer precision timing of it all. It was a classic moment and I doubt we could have planned it better if we had tried! Here’s what happened…

Jess and I had just completed an 8-mile run around Richmond Park (which for reference, we enjoyed a lot more than running around Wimbledon Common a few weeks previously - less muddy and the paths were clearer). We started from the Roehampton Gate car park where we dumped my trusty lavender blue Nissan Micra (AKA the Smurfmobile) and headed south, running parallel to the edge of the park in a clockwise direction. And we kept on running, following the perimeter until we got to the Richmond Gate some 6 miles later. It was at this point that we realised we hadn’t seen any deer yet (for which the park is famed), and so we chopped back towards the Roehampton Gate car park across the middle of the park on a bit of a deer hunting mission. We were successful and passed by two massive herds; they were seriously beautiful (in my mind, each was related to Bambi) so we had a quick stop and stare before then carrying on towards our ultimate goal, the Smurfmobile.

Upon reaching the car park, we did some stretches (mainly the classic one where it looks like you’re trying to push a tree over – love that one!), drank some water, and then got in to the car to head home.

It was at this moment that the classic moment occurred.

I started the engine, and the radio came on, pretty loudly, at the exact start of Survivor’s ‘Eye of the Tiger’ – the bit where it goes:
DHUM
Dhum-dhum-DHUM
Dhum-dhum-DHUM
Dhum-dhum-DHUUUUM
“Risin’ up, Back on the street…”

Now, possibly being slightly high on endorphins heightened the amazing-ness of this occurrence, but we seriously LOVED it, and bounced out of the car park nodding along while the track blared out at full volume, i.e. looking very un-cool, but giggling wildly all the same.

And it was the perfect end to a good, solid - and dare-I-say-it enjoyable - training run. Excellent. Paris here we come!
